Walking Through Generations

How My Mama Inspired My Love for Movement

When I was young, my big sister and I would follow my mama as she set out on brisk walks around the neighborhood. Oftentimes, I had to run to catch up. She would slow down just a little when we joined her — but not much.

That tradition of movement stayed with me into adulthood. It wasn’t until I was pregnant with my first child that I truly recognized the influence my mama had on my inspiration to stay active. Like her, I’ve explored every neighborhood I’ve lived in, seeking out the safest, most pleasant routes — places without loose dogs, minimal traffic, and paths where I can see others and be seen.

There’s something magical about walking outdoors. Feeling the sun’s warmth, waving hello to neighbors and strangers, and letting your thoughts roam freely — it’s a small daily gift. Walking isn’t just exercise; it’s a way to clear your mind, boost your mood, and energize your body.

I make it a point to move at least three to five times a week. While I’m used to walking alone, I know many people enjoy the camaraderie of a walking group. Grab your friends, a movie club, or a wellness buddy, and take the party outside — or even indoors on a track if that’s your style.

Tips for Safe Walking

Whether you’re walking solo or with a group, safety matters. Here are my top tips:

1
Choose Well-Lit, Populated Routes

Visibility is key — paths where you can see others and be seen.

2
Know Your Neighborhood

Map out routes with minimal traffic and avoid areas with aggressive dogs.

3
Stay Alert

Keep your head up, eyes forward, and avoid distractions like scrolling on your phone.

4
Walk in Groups When Possible

There’s safety in numbers — and it’s more fun!

5
Be Prepared

Wear reflective gear if walking early or late, and bring water to stay hydrated.
